Hygiene+ frequently asked questions

Full answers about Hygiene+ paper-based disposable sanitary waste bins — disposal, contracts, the 7kg threshold and how to order.

What is Hygiene+?

Hygiene+ is a paper-based disposable sanitary waste bin for workplace washrooms. It is designed for businesses that want a hygienic, low-plastic, no-contract alternative to serviced sanitary bin collections.

Who is Hygiene+ for?

It is best suited to low-volume workplace washrooms such as small offices, clinics, salons, cafés, retail units, schools, gyms, construction welfare units, male washrooms, female washrooms and gender-neutral washrooms.

Is Hygiene+ an alternative to a sanitary bin service contract?

Yes. Hygiene+ lets businesses buy bins when needed instead of paying for scheduled sanitary bin servicing. It is particularly suitable where bins are often lightly used or serviced before they are full.

Do I legally need a sanitary bin?

Workplace washrooms should provide a suitable, hygienic way for users to dispose of sanitary and personal hygiene waste. The law does not usually prescribe a specific service provider or bin type, so businesses can choose an appropriate solution for their site.

Can sanitary waste go in general waste?

In many low-volume workplaces, sealed municipal offensive waste such as sanitary protection waste may be disposed of through mixed municipal waste if the total produced is below the relevant threshold and your waste contractor accepts this route. GOV.UK guidance says that if more than 7kg of municipal offensive waste is produced, or there is more than one bag in a collection period, it must be segregated from mixed municipal waste. Customers should confirm the right route with their own waste contractor.

What is the 7kg threshold?

The 7kg threshold relates to municipal offensive waste produced in a collection period. If a site produces more than 7kg, or more than one bag in a collection period, it should be segregated from mixed municipal waste. Many small offices and low-use washrooms produce far less than this, but each business should check its own arrangements.

How do I dispose of a full Hygiene+ bin?

When full, use the permanent seal and place the bin into the agreed waste route for your site. For many low-volume businesses this may be mixed municipal waste, subject to volume and waste contractor acceptance. Higher-volume sites may need an offensive waste route.

Does it smell?

The built-in Bio-matt™ absorbs moisture in the base of the bin to support maximum odour reduction. The temporary seal also helps keep the bin discreet between uses.

Does it leak?

Hygiene+ uses a water-resistant internal lining and built-in absorbent Bio-matt™. The bin is designed for sanitary waste and personal hygiene waste, not free liquids.

How long can a bin stay in place?

This depends on usage, site policy and hygiene checks. Low-volume sites may use fewer bins per month than serviced contracts assume. Replace the bin when full, damaged, wet externally, or when your site cleaning schedule requires it.

Is it suitable for male washrooms?

Yes. Hygiene+ is suitable for male, female and gender-neutral washrooms, including spaces where incontinence products or other personal hygiene waste may need discreet disposal.

Is it suitable for construction welfare units?

Yes. It is flat-packed, easy to store, easy to place in welfare units and does not require a separate sanitary bin servicing visit.

How many bins do I need?

Usage varies by site, but as a starting point:

• 1 cubicle / low use: start with 1 bin per month

• 2–3 cubicles / medium use: start with 2 bins per month

• Busy site or clinic: start with 3+ bins per month
